Risnjak National Park

In the realm of the brown bears

DE / EN

Only 20 km from the Mediterranean coast, in the endless forest seas on the border with Slovenia, we find the highest density of brown bears in Europe. And in the heart of this area very special forests grow, those of the Risnjak National Park. For at least 60 years no tree has been felled and no animal has been hunted here.

A natural fauna and flora that is second to none was able to survive in the sometimes primeval forest-like stocks. In addition to the brown bears, several wolf packs roam the area, hawks and dormice live in the old forests, and the name giver of this area (ris means lynx in Croatian) is at home here. And we will explore this fascinating wilderness ...

On this 7-day expedition we travel by minibus from Vienna before we go deeper and deeper into the forest by jeep. We will first spend the night in a bear-watching hut in the national park, where we will try to get a first look at these impressive mammals. Accompanied by a national park ranger, we then march deeper and deeper into the realm of the brown bear and pitch our tents in the middle of the forest. We sneak up on wild boars, deer and white-backed woodpeckers, look for the tracks of wolves and lynxes, and with luck we will even be able to watch bears! And in the evening by the campfire we might listen to the howling of the wolves ...
